Marc studied art in Munich and in 1903 he visit France and studied the work of the impressionist artists.From 1904 to 1907, he suffered from severe depression, but in 1907 he returned to Paris and was excited by the work of Gauguin and van Gogh. By 1910 Marc had discovered Matisse's work and he held his first solo exhibition in Munich. It was there he met Auguste Macke. In 1911 he and Wassily Kandinsky formed Der Blaue Reiter (Blue Rider), an influential and avant-garde group of artists. One of the primary aims of this group was to use art to express spirituality.Marc enlisted at the outbreak of World War 1 and was killed in military action at Verdun in 1916, following in the footsteps of his by then good friend, August Macke.
